Sai Fundamentals

When going forward you would typically do an even number of techniques. 
You can do each technique any number of times, space permitting of course!


To make home training easier once you have an idea of what you are doing, here is a summary home training guide Sai Fundamentals

Kime - right foot forward, both sai closed, make sure
the shaft of the sai is tight against the forearm.

Sai always vertical when resting on hip.
All punches are lunge punches off the front foot.

  1. F - Punch
    Step left foot forward, lunge punch, sai vertical.

  2. B - Upper head block
    Step left foot back.
    Block by punching up at 45 degrees, knuckles facing back.  Yoku must be on opposite side of head.

  3. F - Punch, Bo (hand) strike, close
    Step left foot forward, punch, open sai, strike 45 degrees.  Don't let sai strike much beyond horizontal.

  4. B - Down block
    Step left foot back.  Knuckles face to the side

  5. F - Punch, side body strike, close
    Step left foot forward, punch, bring sai to opposite side, strike,
    close. Thumb locked behind shaft.  Don't strike past your body.

  6. B - Closed sai, close side block
    Step left foot back, block chest height.  Sai faces to the side, slight twist in the torso.

  7. F - Punch, side head strike, close
    Step left foot forward, punch, bring sai to right side, strike, close
    Thumb locked behind shaft.  Don't strike past your head.


  8. B - Close sai, open side block
    Step left leg back,  block chest height. 
    Bend wrist and twist, to make knuckles face the side as much as possible.  Shaft locked on side of forearm.

  9. F - Open sai, open side head block (Bo trap), same hand top head strike, close sai
    Start left hand block, no step.
    Strike is with the same hand as block.  To do the head strike bring the sai back in an arc, to slide off the Bo.
    Step forward left leg with the strike

  10. B - Open sai, close side head block
    Step left leg back.  Koku face side to side, not front to back.
    08:50 - 09:15

  11. F - Open sai, open side head block (Bo Trap), other hand side head strike, close both sai
    Start right hand block, no step. Keep Bo trapped, step forward leg leg with the strike  

  12. B - X-Block in front of face
    Right foot forward, shuffle back

  13. F - Hand Strike, pull back, stab, close
    Step left foot forward.
    05:35 - 05:45

  14. B - Open Sai, leg block (lift leg), upper head block
    Start right foot forward. Step lifted leg back, after block.



Sai fundamentals with a partner

Attacker ( bo side) starts with right foot forward.
Defender (sai side) starts with left foot forward. 

1. A - LFF, down head strike
   D - LFF, open cross head block
   A - RFF, right head strike
   D - LFF, left closed sai open head block

   A - LFF, left head strike
   D - RFF, right closed sai open head block
   A - RFF, right middle strike
   D - LFF, left closed sai open middle block

   A - LFF, left middle strike
   D - RFF, right closed sai open middle block
   A - RFF, right upward leg strike
   D - LFF, left closed sai open leg block

   A - LFF, left upward leg strike
   D - RFF, right closed sai open leg block
   A - RFF, groin strike
   D - LFF, open cross groin block

Reset to kamae

2. A - LFF, head thrust
   D - RFF, right open sai open head block
   A - RFF, head thrust
   D - LFF, left open sai open head block
 
   A - LFF, middle thrust
   D - RFF, right open sai open middle block
   A - RFF, middle thrust
   D - LFF, left open sai open middle block

   A - LFF, left upward leg strike
   D - RFF (left leg behind right leg), left open sai leg block, right open sai head block
   A - RFF, right upward leg strike
   D - LFF (right leg behind left leg), right open sai leg block, left open sai head block

Reset to kamae

3. A - LFF, middle thrust
   D - RFF, right closed sai closed middle block
   A - RFF, middle thrust
   D - LFF, left closed sai closed middle block

   A - LFF, middle thrust
   D - RFF, reverse zenkutsu dachi, right closed sai downward deflection
   A-  RFF, middle thrust
   D - LFF, reverse zenkutsu dachi, left closed sai downward deflection

   A - LFF, stepping in to defender, bo parallel to the ground
   D - RFF, double closed sai block, catch bo in prongs, bring in and double groin punch.

Sai Bo Fundamentals with a partner

Both sides start with left foot back
Sai side attacks first.
Come back to kamae when back in original spot.

1. Sai Attack - Vertical punch, top head strike
  Bo Defence - Top head block
     
  Bo Attack - Top head strike
  Sai Defence - Top head block (Shuffle on first one)
     
2. Sai Attack - Horizontal punch, side head strike
  Bo Defence - Side head block
     
  Bo Attack - Side head strike
  Sai Defence - Side head strike (Shuffle on first one)
     
3. Sai Attack - Vertical punch, side middle strike
  Bo Defence - Middle block (Shuffle on first one)
     
  Bo Attack - Middle strike
  Sai Defence - Outside middle block
     
4. Sai Attack - Vertical punch, stab, cover
  Bo Defence - Shuffle back and jab
     
  Bo Attack - Middle thrust
  Sai Defence - Inside middle block
     
5. Sai Attack - Double side strike
  Bo Defence - Bo-end block (Shuffle on first one)
     
  Bo Attack - Rib strike
  Sai Defence - Down block
     
6. Sai Attack - Double middle punch, double head strike
  Bo Defence - Shuffle back, wind-up head block
     
  Bo Attack - Groin/head strike
  Sai Defence - Groin/head block
     
7. Bo Attack - Side head strike, lower leg strike (static)
  Sai Defence - Head block, Down strike (static)
