Seiunchin

English : To control and pull into battle



Origin : Goju-Ryu
History : It uses a shiko-dachi (as if riding a horse) position in which the feet are about shoulder width apart with toes pointed out at a 45 degree angle.  The back and head are straight and the shoulders in line with the hips.  This stance is most effective when the opponent is close and directly to the side of the karate-ka.

  1. Bow

    (north)
  2. Look left
  3. Turn left foot 90 degrees

    (west)
  4. Right foot forward into shiko-dachi
  5. Open hands come up close to chest, palm heels touch, push up and out in front of face, palms facing up, arm bent 45 degrees, forearms touching, elbows off stomach
  6. Pull elbows down onto stomach, forearms pull apart, till elbows slide onto side, hands outside of shoulder, arm bent 45 degrees, hands open palms facing back.

  7. look right (north),
    hands come together palm heels touch, reach out in front of face, palms facing up, arm bent 45 degrees, elbows off stomach, close hands,
    fist turn vertical knuckles touching, pull fist back to throat, elbows forward,
    lift elbows as fist push down, to chest,
    fist push down and out till outside thigh, palms face legs.
    (this is a quick flowing move)

  8. Left hand turns over, still at hip,
    right hand opens, back of right hand blocks around, comes down horizontal, palm up,
  9. Right hand turns over, little circle, grasps pulls back, till hand just in front of hip
    left hands strikes nukite-tsuki, palm up.
    Stay square to west.

    (east)
  10. Look right, behind you
  11. Swivel 180 degrees to right on right foot, feet together
    Hands closed at side.

  12. Left foot forward into shiko-dachi
  13. Open hands come up close to chest, palm heels touch, push up and out in front of face, palms facing up, arm bent 45 degrees, forearms touching, elbows off stomach
  14. Pull elbows down onto stomach, forearms pull apart, till
    elbows slide onto side, hands outside of shoulder, arm bent 45 degrees, hands open palms facing back.

  26. Right hand comes up, sort of head block, back-fist into left hand
  27. Pull back, lift right leg, left hand rotates over right fist,
    prepare at hip, left hand onto top of wrist,
    right foot down, into right foot forward seisan-dachi, right chudan oi-tsuki, left hand fingers straight supporting wrist
  28. Pull right hand back to hip, left hand stays out,
    right hiji ate-uchi, elbow into palm on left hand.

    (north-east)
  29. Look right,
    right hand drops horizontal to stomach level, right hand on top clasps left hand,
    right foot steps right 45 degrees, turn right into right foot forward seisan-dachi,
    double hand chudan uchi-uke
  30. Left foot steps forward into shiko-dachi
    left hand blocks gedan-barai
  31. Left foot step back into shiko-dachi, swivel 180 degrees on right foot,
    right hand blocks gedan-barai,
    keep looking north-east.

    (north-west)
  32. Look to left (north-west),
    left hand reaches out horizontal, hands clasp right hand with left on top,
    left foot steps right 45 degrees, turn left into left foot forward seisan-dachi,
    double hand chudan uchi-uke
  33. Right foot steps forward into shiko-dachi
    right hand blocks gedan-barai
  34. Right foot steps back into shiko-dachi, swivel 180 degrees on left foot,
    left hand blocks gedan-barai,
    keep looking north-west.

    (north)
  35. Look north,
    left foot steps back in line with right foot into shiko-dachi,
    right hand taps across face,
    back of left hand comes past groin,
    left hand comes up to head, horizontal, elbow pointing south,
    right hand comes down gedan shuto-uchi,
    left hand comes up, arm bent 90 degrees, palm facing west.
  36. Swivel 180 degrees on left foot into shiko-dachi, (right foot back),
    left hand taps across face,
    back of right hand comes past groin, 
    right hand comes up to head, horizontal, elbow pointing south.
    left hand comes down gedan shuto-uchi,
    right hand comes up, arm bent 90 degrees, palm facing east ERROR?.

  37. Right foot steps up to left foot, feet together,
    right hand comes around jodan tettsui-uchi, elbow bent 45 degrees, left palm supporting right forearm
  38. Pull right hand back, keeping left palm on right forearm,
    step right foot forward into seisan-dachi with jodan oi-tsuki.

    (south-west)
  39. Look over left shoulder behind you,
    step right foot across 2 shoulder widths to left,
    swivel 225 degrees to left into left foot forward seisan-dachi (keep low, push down),
    chuge-uke left hand up, right down.
  40. Right hand reaches palm forward,
    left foot steps forward into shiko-dachi,
    left hand jodan oi-tsuki.
    left hand uraken-uchi,
    left hand gedan-barai (tettsui-uchi)
  41. Left foot steps back into shiko-dachi, swivel 180 degrees on right foot,
    right hand gedan-barai.

    (north-east)
  42. Look left,
    swivel 180 degrees to left, as right foot steps up to left foot,
    right foot back into left foot forward seisan-dachi,
    chuge-uke left hand up, right down
  43. Left hand reaches forward,
    right foot steps forward and stomps into zenkutsu-dachi feet inline, KIAI,
    drop immediately into shiko-dachi, right hand jodan oi-tsuki,
    right hand uraken-uchi,
    right hand gedan-barai (tettsui-uchi),
  44. Right foot steps back into shiko-dachi, swivel 180 degrees on left foot,
    left hand gedan-barai.

    (north)
  45. Look north,
    left foot steps back, break the hug with right foot forward neko-ashi-dachi.
  46. Right foot steps back, break the hug with left foot neko-ashi-dachi.
  47. Right hand gedan gyaku-tsuki, square up to north, left hand stays up across chest, fist closed KIAI
  48. Right foot step forward into seisan-dachi,
    Right hand uraken-uchi, makes circle going forward, left hand comes to sternum, fingers vertical.
  49. Open hands drop down,
    left foot slides back,
    pull back into right foot forward neko-ashi-dachi,
    arms come around, reach right up,
    arms come together in-front of face, palms facing you above head,
    forearms vertical, touching,
    arms push down till fingers at nose, forearms stay together,
    push elbows down and out to side, rotate hands so palms face each other,
    right foot stomps flat,
    fingers should stop at chin/throat height, hands 1 head widths apart,
    arms on 45 degree angle.

  50. Left foot steps up.
