Sanchin

English : Three battles



Origin : Goju-Ryu
History : It emphasizes strong techniques and breath control. The name means "three battles", and refers to the control of mind, body, and breathing during the performance of the kata. The control of mind, body, and breathing are the sources of chi (vital energy). This energy is generated in the tanden which is an area two to three inches below the navel.

Note:
  • All the punches and blocks in this Kata are twist techniques.
  • When you punch the fist twists horizontal in the last 25% of movement.
  • When hand comes to chamber palm faces up.
  • When blocking the fist is outside the shoulder, palm back.
  • Breath in through the nose, out through the mouth.
  • Concentrate on breathing deep in the lungs using you diaphragm.
    The stomach should move in and out, shoulders should NOT move up and down but should stay rolled forward pushing down.
  • Torso should be straight.
  • Breathing should be exaggerated and audible but not overly so.
    Generally, breathing in should be relaxed, out under tension.
  1. Bow
    (north - the whole Kata is performed north)

  2. Right foot forward into sanchin-dachi, quick full breath in 100%,
    as stance is set, double chudan uchi-uke, hard breath out 90%.

  3. Pull left hand back to chamber, slow breath in 90%.

  4. Left hand chudan gyaku-tsuki, slow breath out 45%,
    as fist starts twisting right hand moves left to center line,
    as fist stops, right hand moves right to block, as techniques end full tension,
    left hand blocks chudan uchi-uke, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  5. Left foot forward into sanchin-dachi, slow breath in 45%,
    pull right hand back to chamber, slow breath in 45%.

  6. Right hand chudan gyaku-tsuki, slow breath out 45%,
    as fist starts twisting left hand moves left to center line,
    as fist stops, left hand moves right to block, as techniques end full tension,
    right hand blocks chudan uchi-uke, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  7. Right foot forward into sanchin-dachi, slow breath in 45%,
    pull left hand back to chamber, slow breath in 45%.

  8. Left hand chudan gyaku-tsuki, slow breath out 45%,
    as fist starts twisting right hand moves left to center line,
    as fist stops, right hand moves right to block, as techniques end full tension,
    left hand blocks chudan uchi-uke, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  9. Pull right hand back to chamber, slow breath in 90%.

  10. Right hand chudan gyaku-tsuki, slow breath out 45%,
    as fist starts twisting left hand moves left to center line,
    as fist stops, left hand moves right to block, as techniques end full tension,
    right hand blocks chudan uchi-uke, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  11. Pull left hand back to chamber, slow breath in 90%.

  12. Left hand chudan gyaku-tsuki, slow breath out 45%,
    as fist starts twisting right hand moves left to center line,
    as fist stops, right hand moves right to block, as techniques end full tension.

  13. Left hand opens, right hand opens, comes next to left, arms stretched, both fists clench, thumbs down at 45 degrees,
    hands pull apart one fist width, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  14. Open hands both come to chest, left over right, slow breath in 45%,
    hands pull down and back to chamber, palms up, slow breath in 45%.

  15. Both hands push out nukite-tsuki, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension,
    hands turn over, both fists clench, thumbs down at 45 degrees, hands pull apart one fist width, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  16. Open hands both come to chest, left in front of right, slow breath in 45%,
    hands pull down and back to chamber, palms up, slow breath in 45%.

  17. Both hands push out nukite-tsuki, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension,
    hand turn over, both fists clench, thumbs down at 45 degrees, hands pull apart one fist width, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  18. Open hands both come to chest, left over right, slow breath in 45%,
    hands pull down and back to chamber, palms up, slow breath in 45%.

  19. Both hands push out nukite-tsuki, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension
    Hand turn over, both fists clench, thumbs down at 45 degrees, hands pull apart one fist width, slow breath out 45%, as techniques end full tension.

  20. Put your right wrist palm up, on left wrist palm down, (mawashi-uke hands will move anti-clockwise)
    left hand around up on outside, right hand down on inside, quick breath in 45%, as right foot steps back next to left,
    left hand around down, right hand around up (now right hand is up, left hand is down),
    quick breath in 45%, as right foot steps back into left foot forward sanchin-dachi, left hand pulls back to left hip, right hand pulls back to right shoulder,
    push both hands forward, slow breath out 90%, as techniques end full tension.

  21. Right hand comes down, left hand up,  put your left wrist palm up, on right wrist palm down, (mawashi-uke hands will move clockwise)
    right hand around up on outside, left hand down on inside, quick breath in 45%, as left foot steps back next to right,
    right hand around down, left hand around up (now left hand is up, right hand is down), quick breath in 45%, as left foot steps back into right foot forward sanchin-dachi, right hand pulls back to right hip, left hand pulls back to left shoulder,
    push both hands forward, slow breath out 90%, as techniques end full tension.

  22. Left foot steps up into musubi-dachi,
    hands come together, left on top of right, palms up, fingers across body at sternum, quick breath in 90%,
    hands turn over, push down to below navel, quick breath out 90%.

  23. Hands turn over come up to sternum, quick breath in 90%,
    hands turn over, push down to below navel, quick breath out 90%.

  24. Hands turn over come up to sternum, quick breath in 90%
    Hands turn over, push down to below navel, quick breath out 90%.
